Truck in a Canal
So how is the weather in Amsterdam you ask? Well, it is sunny, clear, and cool especially in the shade. Bill says it is cool but Karen says it is cold as she goes around in her jacket all day.
After enjoying the Christian restaurant for lunch yesterday, we decided to go back for breakfast and we were not disappointed. The walls are covered with mosiacs with verses on them, and the hospitality is great.
After breakfast we walked to the floating flower market and along the way we were amused when we saw a smart car type truck fall into the canal. Mike and Carla were not with us as they had a food tour today.
One minute the owner (in red jacket) was standing behind his scooter (that's what they call these little vehicles), on shore (see concrete edge to lower right) then off it went into the canal nose first, did a full somersault and turned upright. He threw his arms up into the air as to say oh brother, then got a boatsman to hand him a gaffling hook, grabbed the front of the scooter then several men hooked it with a rope to pull it out of the canal. This must happen often because Mike and Carla saw one by their hotel go in yesterday! You'd think they'd use an emergency brake or rock...daaaaa!
After laughing to ourselves, we continued until on to the flower market. Karen was a little disappointed that it was mostly a lot of bulbs and not many flowers. It was especially frustrating since we cannot bring the bulbs back to the US so she couldn't buy any beautiful tulip or amarylis bulbs. We continued our walk to the Heineken Experience for a factory tour. We learned the history and saw how the beer is made. Here, the guide explains the ingredients.
After seeing the brass mixers, sifters, etc., it was time to see the horses they use much like the Clydesdale's. This is Mike, named for the President & CEO.
Next, how to properly drink beer - and you've never seen this nor have I -and the correct way to pour beer ensuring it has the correct amount of head (foam) on top.
Our walk along the canals were picturesque, but by the time we got back to the hotel, we had walked 6-miles...time for a rest.
After a couple hours rest, time for dinner at a local Italian restaurant. The food and price was great.
After dinner we walked around a little (and degrees and by now it was below 55 degrees with a 10 mile/hr breeze, which cuts through you) before heading back to our hotel a little after 9 pm (it stays light past 10 pm).
Tomorrow we have two tours set up and Ric and Vicki will arrive late afternoon.
