Castles along the Rhein
Today we arrived at Koblenz. This was the highlight of our trip 2 years ago and we were disappointed that we had very little time in this lovely town with beautiful flowers and cute statues. We only had the morning so we took the included tour up to Marksburg Castle, a beautifully preserved, 700-year-old hilltop fortress. Although we had light rain, it didn't stop us. The castle is at the top of a hill with beautiful views of the town and the Rhine river. It is in great shape because it was never damaged in any wars. We safely navigated the many rocky stairs on our tour before going back to the ship for lunch.
May I pour you a glass of wine Or fire the cannon?
Although overcast and rain, the views from the castle are magnificent.
After lunch, we departed for an afternoon of cruising through some of the most beautiful scenery you'll ever see. Small German villages, hillside vineyards and lots of castles - big and small, ruins and well preserved. As you can see the scenery was beyond words. The clouds cleared and it was a beautiful clear and warm afternoon. This area is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Shortly after passing this castle on the Rhein, we passed the famous, treacherous and rocky point we're sure you've heard of - the Loreley.
This evening we made a turn to go up the Main River which is pronounced 'mine'. We also started going through the first of about 60 locks. The guys are interested in the locks but the gals think they are about as exciting as watching paint dry.
For those in our small group who are keeping up with us, Vicki has a cold that she caught before they left, so she needs prayers to feel better soon and prayers that the rest of us don't catch it. Thanks praying.
Cruising the Rhein on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
