Vicki's Back!

Today was a good day. Vicki is back amoung the living and acting like a real tourist - joining us on our excursion, walking around the old town and spending money!  Yea for Vicki.

This morning we got to sleep in and enjoy a leisurely breakfast since we were not arriving in Bamberg until after lunch.

After breakfast we had a glass blowing demonstration by Karl Ittig.  He is a master glass blower who studied with Chihuly and has a large family business here in Germany.  Besides demonstrating glass blowing, he educated us about aspects of the trade and his life.  He was humerous and had a touching story about his mother's efforts to have the family escape from East Germany, which they all succesfully did when many others were killed trying.

After the demonstration, he had several unique items for sale and had so many people wanting to buy things that Karen and Carla jumped in to help him.  After making many sales, he was generous enough to not accept payment for the things Karen and Carla wanted to buy. Such a nice man!

After his presentation and sales, the tour director provided insight about the Main-Danube Canal which we entered at dinner time. This portion of the 100-mile canal permits traffic flow between the North Sea and Black Sea, named the Europa Canal. Taking 32-yrs to complete, the canal was completed in 1992 opening a trans-European water freight route. At this point on the canal, we are now over 1300-ft above sea level from where we started.

After lunch we got on the bus and went into Bamberg for a city tour. Vicki felt well enough to join us.

Like other cities we visited, we saw many medieval buildings and excellant antique shops mixed in with name brand stores and the Christmas store. After our guided tour, the guys headed to a local tavern to try the Smoked Beer. This beer tasted liked smoked sausage and the guys said it was quite good. Meantime, the girls hit the Christmas store to ensure they stay in business.

We were glad Vicki was feeling better and could join us today as we toured Bamberg, although she said she's been enjoying the ship even when not able to join in.

This evening we enjoyed another wonderful dinner served by our favorite waiter, Grigor.  Then we settled down to relax in our soft comfy bed.  See you tomorrow - in Nuremberg.
