Green, Green and more Green
Our host at Rocklands B&B, John provided us with a hearty Irish breakfast this morning. What a spread.
Then we set off along 'The Wild Atlantic Way', similar to our Hwy 1 along the coast - except it's got more turns and curves than Hwy 1 and very narrow. So narrow, at times we had to stop as did the oncoming car and pass each other at a crawl. Thank goodness the rear view mirrors had an electric control to fold in. Man, these roads are narrow but Bill never side swiped anyone.
Green, green, and more green everywhere you look. Yes, this is Ireland. We stopped often to admire the scenery and take a short break.
One of our stops was at 'Stone Circle'. These circles were used in ancient times for ceremonial/ritual reasons. In fact, archologists found human bones buried there.
We found a really good pub/pizzeria in Bantry Harbour. Our baguette, similar to a pizza, was delicious.
Our drive continued through the Ring of Kerry and Killarney National Park. Bill swears he must have shifted gears a thousand times, going uphill, downhill, around curves, sometimes in low gear, other times in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th gear - what a workout! Bill was tired of constantly shifting gears but he said it was worth it, and we're glad we're doing this by car.
Finally, we reached our destination where we'll be staying 2-nights, Ballyseede Castle, one of Ireland's finest luxury castle hotels. The castle itself was built in 1590.
Our room is beautiful and spacious overlooking the garden. In fact, we are in the 'President's West Wing' portion of the castle.
We enjoyed strolling around the beautiful grounds and visiting with the resident donkeys, shetland ponies, and two Irish Wolfhounds.
Later we enjoyed dinner in their dining room. Bill had steak, potatoes, broccoli, and a warm pear and almond tart with ice cream and whipped cream for desert. Wow, he never eats like this at home. Karen had a very nice vegan dinner and special, yummy fruit parfait for desert.
BTW: Cox is having problems and as of the last two days we're not able to send (and we think receive) emails.
