Red Train thru the Alps

This morning we were greeted with a sunny day as we opened our window to start the day.  We are leaving Liechtenstein for St. Moritz, but first we need to buy some Vaduz chocolates to take back to all our friends.  Since all the stores were closed yesterday, we planned to make our purchases this morning before we left, so after breakfast we went over to the lovely chocolate store next to our hotel and were disappointed to still find it closed.  We tried another store but it was also closed.  The sign on both stores indicated they should have been open, but alas, no deal, so all of you guys are so far missing out on chocolate.

Cute figurine on the front of our hotel in Vaduz looking for chocolate!

We jumped into our taxi and headed back into Switzerland to the train station to start our journey.  Our first train was only a half hour trip from the Buchs, SG station to the Chur, Switzerland station where we changed trains to the famous Red Swiss train to St. Moritz.  From Vaduz it was a continuous climb to over 6,000 feet in Moritz. This part of the trip from Chur, over the Swiss Alps, has been on Bill's bucket list (Bucket List Part #1) for some time.  Part #2 on his bucket list comes on Wednesday.

So many views from the train. Just gorgeous.

The narrow gauge Red train snakes its way through the Albula Valley. This train is considered the slowest express train in the world and it takes us over 145 bridges and through 50 tunnels and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our train as it ascends towards St. Moritz over a high viaduct and through a tunnel.

As Bill has been wanting to do this trip since COVID, he said it is so spectacular that he found himself tearing up a couple times.

More views from the train.

When we arrived St. Moritz, it was a beautiful sunny day with a temperature of 68 but felt like 62 due to the wind. For 2-nights we are staying at the Schweizerhof hotel over looking the lake and Alps.

The view from our bed looking the opposite direction.

Once we were settled, time for an afternoon snack. We found an outside cafe a short distance from the hotel and had some soup and a drink. Karen also found some chocolates for desert at the store behind my head in the picture below!

Outside the cafe.

After a wonderful dinner here at the hotel, we decided to take a short walk to enjoy the scenery.

On our walk we found a waterfall near our hotel.

Before heading to bed, we stopped to see the tulips in front of our hotel.
