Bill's Bucket List, Part 2

This morning after breakfast, we boarded the famous Bernina Express from St. Moritz up over the Swiss and Italian Alps.  Seems like everywhere we turn is a picture – but we can’t include 100 pictures!  No wonder it is a UNESCO World Heritage train. This is part 2 of Bill's bucket list.

The station in St. Moritz is at 3,355 feet above sea level and the highest point for the Bernina Express was 7,392 feet offering some of the most iconic vistas of snow-capped peaks, rugged terrain and alpine lakes.  This narrow gauge railway was an engineering marvel built in 1910 and includes a special spiral viaduct. Truly awe-inspiring.

Now, how about some pictures.

Around the spiral and then down under we went.

From the end of the line in Tirano, Italy at 817 feet, it was time to change trains. First we went to Milan Centrale which like all typical European large city train stations, it was chaos. Then we took our last train of the day from Milan Centrale to Verona, Italy - our final destination late this afternoon.

We checked into a beautiful hotel (recommended to us by Mark Taylor) that is located just down the street from the beautiful ancient roman arena.

Our street.

As we were checking in Karen realized that she left her purse in the taxi which had driven away.  Oh the terror! Having to go to the American Embassy to get a new passport plus having her phone and IDs missing threatened to ruin our trip.  As soon as she missed her purse the bell hop went running down the street after the taxi and after a little while he came back with a smile and her purse in his hand.  Our Hero!!! Bill tipped him generously for his sprinting to catch the taxi - good runner.

After we settled down Bill was in the mood for pizza so we went out to the row of outdoor restaurants and had a very unusual pizza.

It was a cheese pizza with french fries on it.  It was really good and we decided that someone needs to put that pizza on the menu in the US.
