A Castle and A Cathedral

This morning was as warm as yesterday.  We could do with a little bit cooler, but we started out after breakfast walking to the Corco Castelvecchio (Verona Castle) that sits along the river.  On our walk, we had to take a couple more street pictures.

Once inside we saw an archeological dig where they have been spending the past 3 years excavating a medieval church.

Leaving the hot outside air, we went inside to the Castel museum and enjoyed several well done sculptures.

Bill walked up several flights of stairs to some pictures for you.  Here they are:

We intended to then go to the Verona Cathedral which was a little ways in the opposite direction but our old legs and the hot weather persuaded us to stop back at our room to rest and cool off.

Following our rest and cool off, it was time for lunch.  We had the name of a restaurant from the helpful people at the hotel which was along the way to the Cathedral (Duomo) so we used Bill's phone GPS to find it.  We split a delicious cereal dough pizza (sorry no picture), but take our word for it, it was yummy.

After lunch we walked on to the Cattedrale di Santa Marie Matricolare Duomo which is huge and covers several blocks.

Inside we were given voice listening boxes to learn all about the Duomo, which was very informative and helpful, but we were not able to relate to all the artists, sculptures, frescos, and various other pieces of art.  Our first stop was the baptistry.

The central Duomo was next and it was very large and all the walls were covered with art and religious treasures.  It was a little difficult to follow the narration and grasp all the meaning of it all.  Hopefully the pictures will help you see some of it and how hugely beautiful it was.  We have been in many European cathedrals but this one was wildly beautiful and full of varied types of art.

On the walk back to our hotel (it was now 90 degrees) we walked along the river as it was shady and cooler.  But first we had to make our last stop - the local 'Gelato al Naturale' shop - where we've been having some of the best gelato ever!

Oh yea!!!

Time to relax, work on this blog, get ready for dinner and pack for our travel day tomorrow.

For dinner we went to Ristorante Greppia, recommended by the hotel, and boy was it good. They even make their own pasta.

Karen is tossing our salad - great job.

When we arrived, there many empty tables. Outside was totally booked for the opera tonight and a few were reserved inside.  When we finished all the tables were full. No wonder, the food was fantastic!
