Two Desserts!

This morning (Monday) we docked in Kiel, Germany.  Kiel is a nice port close to town but not much exciting to see so we pre-arranged a taxi to take us to a more exciting city - a UNESCO Heritage site - a township called Lubeck.  After a relaxing breakfast with the Greens, we met up with the Colacito's and our taxi driver.  The drive was an hour and 15 minutes.  We arrived just outside the old city gates and met our guide, Elke. And yes, the city gate is sinking inward at the same angle as the leaning tower of Pisa as are a few other buildings.

Lubeck is a large town with an old city center located on an island on the Trave river. Elke gave us a brief history of the city and then we walked through the old gates. We enjoyed walking in and around some of the old buildings learning more about the city.  She took us to the town square to see the city hall and the market that was going on at the time.

We had to stop at the Niedereggers - the oldest and best maker of marzipan.   The store was beautiful and full of all different shapes and flavors of marzipan as well as many beautiful pastries.  We tasted some and bought some.

Our next stop was a very nice cafeteria for lunch which would save precious time and money.

After lunch we visited St. Marys Cathedral, built in 1620 then bombed in WW II. Then in the 50's it was rebuilt.  The Brits bombed it in retaliation for the German bombing of Coventry Cathedral.  Otherwise the town was not bombed because it was a refugee town for the red cross.

The bells in the towers crashed to the ground when the towers were bombed and they left them in the cathedral where they fell.

This lovely church had an elaborate clock like the one we saw yesterday in Rostock but newer because the origional one was destroyed.  This clock goes to 2078.

We walked through several small alleyways that were part of the medieval city.  These narrow paths led to some of the nicest neighborhoods in the city.

We stopped at a seafarers restaurant to see where the sailors used to congregate. The inside was remarkable with old wooden benches and walls. The girls did a little shopping and the guys met up with Vicki in a local coffee shop where she decided to take a break.

It was a cool (as in temperature) day with some clouds mixed with sun and only a few showers on the ride back to the ship. The ride allowed a few of us to get in a short nap.

Since we have to pack Tuesday night for a Wednesday departure, we celebrated by eating at the Pinnacle Grill onboard. Everyone who had steak said it was the best they've had in years.

Dinner was an event with 7 courses. Why 7? Ric and Vicki will be celebrating their 48th wedding anniversary on Wednesday and we made sure the restaurant was aware several days earlier and before dessert, they brought them an anniversary cake.

Let's count the courses:

1st course - Amuse-bouche (single bite sized hors d'oeure)
2nd course - appetizer
3rd course - soup/salad
4th course - main dish
5th course - coffee and bite size chocolate
6th course - anniversary cake
7th course - dessert

So, we had desert twice!!!
