Tattoo for Two

Opening the hotel drapes this morning showed us a beautiful clear day (notice the blue skies in the pictures!).  How nice.  We have a full day today so we stopped at a little cafe for a hearty breakfast.  Karen had some Scottish oatmeal - they call it porriage - and fruit while Bill had french toast and fruit.

After filling our tummys we walked over to the Edinburgh Castle.

Karen had purchased tickets ahead of time so we avoided the line and Bill had read about a free tour given by a live guide so we avoided the purchase of audio guides.  Our tour guide was very nice and informative.  He even gave us tips about the Tattoo tonight.  Like be sure to bring a blanket.  Since we don't have a blanket we considered buying one.  After our tour we walked around the castle, saw the crown jewels, and generally enjoyed the castle and the great views of the city.

Mary Queen of Scots was in residence and she gave us some pointers on courtly behavior.

Leaving the castle, we walked down the royal mile, which is a long street that comes out of the castle with lots of shops etc.  We knew that we were coming here at a busy time but we didn't know that besides the Tattoo there are tons of festivals and other things going on so the crowds are huge and a challenge to navigate through the main areas including the royal mile.

For lunch we decided to try pizza in Scotland and found it to be very good.  After lunch we met up for our tour of the Edinburgh underground.  It was a great view of the history of Edinburgh and a little creepy as people lived, worked, and died in these areas.

Some folks have even seen 'ghosts' there.  BOO!  Anyway, it was a great tour and we were done in time to get back to our hotel to rest up before dinner and our evening at the Tattoo. On our way back we found some nice fleece blankets for only 10 pounds so we got a plaid one to keep us warm tonight.

After a nice rest and dinner we attended The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a must see!
It was so spectacular and we had great seats.  The evening was a little cool so we were glad we had our cozy blanket.

The Tattoo ended with a spectacular fireworks show, then a brisk walk back to our hotel.  Tomorrow we set out driving into the highlands.  Pray for Bill as he drives on the wrong side of the road.  Pray for Karen too.
