Everything's Backward!
We woke refreshed this morning after sleeping in a little - how nice. We took a taxi to the rental car place and were quickly on the road. If you've ever been to or driven in the U.K. or Scotland, you know driving can be a challenge. Why - because everything's backward! You drive from the right seat - for us that's stressful in itself. Once in the rental car, then everything else is reversed as well, to include the stick shift, blinkers, speedometer, etc. Then you drive on the left side of the road. Then terminology such as dual carriageway (double divided road) contribute to the confusion. So we adapt and when Bill glides too close on the left Karen says 'keep right', when she should say 'mind the curb'! At least the round abouts are very forgiving because if you miss your turnoff, you can just go around again or as many times as you need to get it right. Fortunately this only happened once.
Well, enough about driving. We were on our way and once we left the Edinburgh area, it was much easier. The scenery was so beautiful as we drove through pine forests and along roads with bright pink wild flowers. On the way we stopped for lunch at the small town of Dunkeld.
This was where Beatrix Potter got her inspiration to write the Peter Rabbit stories. Further along the road, the scenery changed a little with less trees and hills covered with heather and dotted with sheep.
We arrived at Glengarry Castle Hotel B&B this afternoon. Thanks to our faithful friend, Mr. GPS, we found the 1-lane road turnoff from the 2-lane country road. After a 1/2 mile down the road, there it was in all its grandeur.
We were escorted to a lovely room overlooking the loch (lake) as well as a herd of sheep grazing on the grass outside the other window.
It was lightly raining as we walked around our Castle and decided it was time to look for a place for dinner in nearby Fort Augustus. Looking around town was a little discouraging for a vegan so we decided to go back and eat at the hotel, but when we started driving back we saw a sign for the Boathouse Restaurant. We searched it out and were rewarded with a table overlooking Loch Ness. Looking at the outside almost caused us to leave, but once inside it was very nice, good food, good prices and great service.
As we enjoyed our dinner, we looked out the window on the loch hoping we could spot Nessie. All we saw were ducks - but we findly found her and her baby right in plane site!
