Gateway to the Arctic

Friday June 30, 2017

Great weather continues and now we are 217 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Tromso is the largest northernmost city in the world with 70,000 inhabitants. As well, Tromso University is also the northernmost university in the world with 10,000 students. For you beer lovers, the city is also home of the northernmost brewery in the world.

Surrounded by mountains, it has long been considered the "Gateway to the Arctic", and starting point for many expeditions. Today's panoramic scenic stop gave us views to the Atlantic and North Sea. It was windy at the top but sunny.

On our return to the ship, we enjoyed panoramic views of the fjord and the Arctic Cathedral, a stunning structure of soaring white rooflines and triangular peaks which has been compared to the Sydney Opera House.

After another wonderful lunch, Bill and Karen walked around downtown looking into one of their oldest churches in the square.

The last stop on our walk around was the largest Lutheran Church above the Arctic Circle.

Tonight we continue further to the most northernmost town in Europe. Because we are often deep between mountains in the fjords, we don't always have good connectivity to publish our blog.
