Downton Abby

This morning again brought us sunshine and a nice farmhouse breakfast with eggs to order with all the trimmings, even fried bread (how dies she do it - eyes shut?).

All of us are Downton Abbey fans so while in England, we had to visit Highclere Castle and Bampton Village.  So off we went with Bill at the wheel.

We arrived at Highclere Castle quickly since it is located very close to where we are staying.  We were very surprised by the amount of land on the property - expansive grassland with sheep, large trees and beautiful gardens as far as the eye could see.

We didn't have to wait too long to get into the castle.

We were disappointed that we weren't allowed to take pictures inside, so we don't have any to share with you. The rooms were very much like what we saw in the series and there were additional rooms to see as well.

The castle is the home of the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon who still live there.  The house had many personal family pictures and great artwork, as well as some photos of the filming of the show in each room.  The center saloon was the center of the castle with a 50 foot high vaulted ceiling.  The wood detail on the doors and all around the house was very beautiful. The castle looks large on TV but we must say, it's massive and beautiful.

Here are the ladies at the front door

After touring the castle, it was again time for food, so we found our way to a nearby pub, The Red House.

Once again, we found a great place and lunch was very good and we topped it off with 3 flavors of sorbet.

Next on the tour was a stop at Bampton Village where some of the filming was done.  We expected it to be very close to the castle, but it was a 45 minute drive through narrow, winding country roads.  Once there, we were rewarded with a beautiful village and a visit to 'Mrs. Crawley's house' and the church they used for the wedding and funeral scenes.

The current library is where the hospital scenes were shot so no pictures because the outside had scaffolding around it.  We also walked along the street in Bampton where we saw actors walking into town in the Downton Abby series.

In Bampton, we stopped at the local market and decided to buy some dinner and take it back to the farmhouse instead of going out again.  We have the use of a kitchen in our annex so we had a nice dinner of cheese, ham, salami, grapes, crackers, veggies, and hummas. And oh yea, chocolate cookies for desert.

Rookhouse Farmhouse B&B is a great find here in the country. The garden (backyard) is set on two acres where they often host weddings and garden parties.

Tomorrow we depart Rookwood Farmhouse and head to our last place of lodging on this trip. Stayed tuned for two more blogs before we head home.
