Facilitrees and Portaplants

Yesterday Bill bought himself Hawaiian Coconut Peanut Butter in a local spice store in Hanapepe and he said it was yummy on toast this morning.

Today we did a one-of-a-kind activity with Kauai Backcounty Adventures: tubing down an old sugar plantation irrigation system, through open canals and 5 tunnels hand dug circa 1870. The canal is fed from one of the wettest spots in the world, Mt. Waialeale here in Kauai.

After driving over some rough dirt roads, we finally reached our starting point. Before getting into the canal, the guides said if anyone needs to use the facilities, this is the last chance before tubing, and all that is available are facilitrees and portaplants.

Although the water was cold when we first stepped in, once in the water and floating started, it was a blast and scenery was beautiful. Some of the time it was a lazy river, then rapids and a 3 ft drop in one location. We wore hard hats with lights so when we were in a tunnel (longest tunnel was a mile long) we turned on our lights. Can you find Denise and Karen?

The canal, tunnels and rapids were very cool and we were happy we'd seen this on TV and thanked Denise for setting it up. After our tubing, Backcountry Adventures treated us to lunch along the canal before returning to base camp.
