The Mayor who Sings
Another beautiful sunny day.
This morning we arrived in Cochen, a small town on the Moselle river, one of several picturesque and charming towns along the way. Our morning tour started with a town tour thru narrow, winding streets admiring medieval buildings teaming with local shops, cafes and architecture.
After boarding a van for the climb to the top of the rock (300 ft above town), we arrived at Reichsburg Castle which overlooks the town and river below.
It was a truly inspiring, gorgeous castle as you imagine in a fairly tale. We were given a tour of several rooms. This gothic castle went through a lot of owners since being built in the 11th century with the various occupations of this valley. It was restored in 1868 - It now belongs to the town and is very authentic inside and out.
The Mosel Valley is best known for its vineyards and Reisling wine. Although we are not "drinkers", we've been enjoying the wine and people in this small community. Another feature of this town would be of great interest to Carla (and others) - they have many wonderful looking bakeries with pastries that were spectacular and oh yes, tasty!
After lunch, we boarded a bus for the 30-min ride to another, very small town where we were greated by the mayor, who was our tour guide (Mayor with his guard).
After learning the history of his town, he took us to his church where the organist entertained us and showed us what the organ could do in that small church. After the recital, we walked thru the old cemetery before heading back into town. In town, he took all 100 of us to the town hall...similar to a biergarden...where we had cheese and wine provided by one of the local farmers. She told us about the vineyards, wine making, etc. and served us 3 different Reisling wines and they were really tasty.
The Mayor also introduced us to his family. His 80 yr old uncle on piano, his 85 yr old mom and his aunt who all hosted us. The uncle was a great piano player and and the mayor sang several songs. The whole family were great entertainers and after a few German songs, he played some oldies but goodies.
We have met some very nice people here and are beginning to find all the Californa people, to include Aliso Viejo, Huntington Beach, etc. We have become acquainted with 2 couples from Canada and another 2 couples from Florida. Also a very elderly man traveling by himself who is a real kick - everyone on the ship knows Ed.
All is well here and the scenery is beautiful.
