The Von Trapp's were here

We started our day with the included - full - breakfast at the Goldener Hirsch, set in a historic vault, built in 1407; a popular meeting point. Breakfast was great with many items to choose from.

Bill, Karen and Ric enjoyed the beautiful morning - strolling down the pedestrian only street outside our hotel (see our hotel sign - left side of photo) in old town (Vicki decided to 'chill' this morning after breakfast). We passed many shops and eateries as well as Motzarts birthplace before coming to the largest Baroque fountain outside of Italy.

Next we stopped to see the inside of the cathedral where the Von Trapp's were married. Nearby we came across a beautiful cemetery beside the cathedral, and while marveling at the florial beauty of each gravesite, we realized this was the cemetery where the Von Trapp family hid from the Nazis as they made their escape.  It looked just like it did in the movie.

Next we took the funicular up to the Honensalzburg Fortress which sits high above the city on a rocky mountain.  This is a large fortress with great views of the city. We enjoyed walking around the grounds and inside before coming back down on the funicular.

We walked back to the hotel to meet up with Vicki, and since our hotel is well known for delicious food, we stayed for lunch. We were not disappointed - very tasty and great service. The Hotel GM stopped by in his traditional Austrian attire.

After lunch, Karen and Vicki had planned a stop at the Christmas store just a couple doors from the hotel hoping to find some specialty items. They were not disappointed and managed to purchase several items to be revealed later.

Bill, Karen and Ric decided another stroll around town was in order to work off lunch and enjoy the old city. Soon after we started out, the clouds opened up. Immediately we looked for shelter, huddling up in a store alcove. It came down in "sheets". It passed within 10-min, the sun re-appeared and we continued on our leisurely stroll along the Salzach river with great views of the Fortress above and the old part of the city.

  1. What an awesome day...that Christmas shop is almost as tempting as the pastries. Can't wait to see what Karen and Vicki bought!
