Ships and Canoeing
We had an early start today as we needed to get going to Pearl Harbor. It was an educational day with a remembrance of the attack on our Pacific Fleet. We also were treated to an outrigger canoe ride with Bill's 21-yr friend and customer, Major General Darryll Wong. It was quite warm today but our Arizona people are not complaining about it.
Our first excursion was to Pearl Harbor where the US involvement in WW II started on Dec 7, 1941. We spent time in the Attack museum where we saw the actual edited draft of Roosevelt's speech. Next we saw a a 20-min movie with actual footage of attack. Seeing and touring really puts history in perspective.
After the movie we boarded a boat for a short ride to the USS Arizona Memorial where 1, 177 men gave their lives.
In the memorial there is a wall with the names of all those who died on the ship.
After visiting the memorial, we toured the WWII submarine Bowfin. It was interesting to see how it operated and how the crew lived on board. It was quite tight quarters. You could see why no one over 6-ft could qualify to crew this sub.
We departed Pearl and headed to Waikiki Beach where we had a quick lunch. At 2:30 we met Darryll Wong at the Outrigger Canoe Club. Bill and (Maj Gen) Darryll Wong have been friends for years and Darryll hosted us at the club where he and a friend, Mark took us canoe surfing.
First up was the 3 boys. They had a ball and Mark said Chandler laughed the entire time. The caught some good waves, enjoyed the ride and even jumped out once to swim and body surf while waiting for a good set.
Second group was Bob, April and Kayley. Like the boys, they had a good time canoe surfing.
Last and not least was Bill, Karen, Darryll and Mark our hosts. We caught a big wave first thing and rode it nearly to shore - the longest ride of the day. After our canoe rides Darryll treated us to snacks and a cold one.
Since working with Hawaii for 21-yrs, it's great to have friends/customers like Darryll that make every trip a memory. Great friend, great host.
