Sea Turtles and Horses at the Sea

Beautiful view out our window this morning as we prepare for today's adventures.

After a casual breakfast here at the hotel we walked over to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center where injured sea turtles are cared for and hopefully released to continue their lives at sea.  BTW - these are breakfast turtles...not the live kind!

They had lots of big turtles being treated and some stay there for a year before getting released.  This one below is a year old.

It was feeding time and we got some good pictures.  One worker was trying to give a Loggerhead turtle his medicine by putting the pills in a piece of fish but the sneaky turtle 🐢 would sometimes spit it out and she would have to try again with another piece of fish.  We think the turtle was smart and kept spitting it out so he could get more fish - sneaky turtle!

Another turtle named Soda Pop needed some shots and blood drawn so we watched that process.

They have several kinds of turtles there and we learned that the most likely cause of injury for sea turtles is mankind in the form of boats injuring them. In fact, you can see a bandage on this ones back where they fixed him up.

This is the beginning of nesting season for the Loggerhead turtles and we saw several nests marked off on the beach on Hutchinson Island but the mother turtles haven’t started their nests here on Jekyll Island yet.

We went into town and had a quick salad bar lunch and then went to the stables for an afternoon horseback ride.  It was beautiful and relaxing especially because we were able to ride on the beach which is something Karen has always wanted to do.

We then got Bill some Sea Turtle ice cream and enjoyed a walk along the beach.  Since it is a weekend there was a lot of families enjoying the beautiful day on the wide flat beach.

Tonight's dinner was here in the historic Grand Dining Room.
