Why-O-Why

Image
Although we woke to tropical rain and clouds, we set out on our walk. This would be our last day on the garden island - Kauai, Karen's favorite tropical paradise. After our morning walk along the beach watching sea turtles, it was time to collect our things and pack up. Before returning to our timeshare, Karen helped out this little snail as he/she was in the middle of the walkway because she was afraid someone might step on him. The good news is Waiohai has a O'Hana room for us owners allowing us a place to store our things until time to leave. The O'Hana (family) room has a large living area, several TV's and showers...showers being most important so our flight mates don't have to smell sweaty people! Unfortunately, the Colacito's had a 2 pm flight while the Landon's and Kelly's were on the 9 and 10 pm red-eye.  Before taking the Colacito's to the airport, Kelly's and Colacito's stopped by Bubba's for lunch - love all the s

R&R Saturday

Now that we've been here at the resort since last Sunday, we decided today would be an R&R day at the resort and beach. First thing we did was a morning walk down the beach to watch sea turtles again and enjoy the scenery. On our way back to the condo, we stopped by a craft fair in the park as vendors set up. After breakfast the girls walked over and made sure to help out the locals by making a purchase. Next, Snorkel Bob's for some equipment so Chuck and Denise can enjoy the underwater fishies up close. They had a great time and saw schools of fish and several different species. Chuck loved the optical mask, noting he saw better than with his glasses! While they snorkeled, we looked around Koloa Town and Poipu shopping center and found several places for lunch and dinner. We found so many cool places, Karen suggested we stay another week to try them out. We settled for Bubba Burgers for lunch and boy was it good. Karen decided to enjoy some fries and onion rings r

Golf and Malasadas

Image
This blog will cover Thursday and Friday since we just kind of got lazy about blogging. On Thursday morning the guys met up with a friend of Mike's at Puakea Golf Course for 18-holes. After the girls dropped the guys off at the course, they started searching for the Kauai Malasada booth that Carla found on the internet.  In case you don't know what Malasadas are - they are Portugese donuts, in reality they are fried dough balls in sugar.  Anyway, they were warm and yummy.  Then we found the local ABC store for some souveniers that Carla wanted and then visited the Kauai quilt shop and a discount fabric store where Denise found some beautiful white on white Hawaiian fabrics. The rest of the afternoon the girls spent lounging around the beautiful hotel pool while waiting for the guys to get back from the golf course.  The pool is beautiful, warm and overlooks the beach.  The guys joined us at the pool for awhile after they returned.  After getting cleaned up we drove into

Facilitrees and Portaplants

Yesterday Bill bought himself Hawaiian Coconut Peanut Butter in a local spice store in Hanapepe and he said it was yummy on toast this morning. Today we did a one-of-a-kind activity with Kauai Backcounty Adventures: tubing down an old sugar plantation irrigation system, through open canals and 5 tunnels hand dug circa 1870. The canal is fed from one of the wettest spots in the world, Mt. Waialeale here in Kauai. After driving over some rough dirt roads, we finally reached our starting point. Before getting into the canal, the guides said if anyone needs to use the facilities, this is the last chance before tubing, and all that is available are facilitrees and portaplants. Although the water was cold when we first stepped in, once in the water and floating started, it was a blast and scenery was beautiful. Some of the time it was a lazy river, then rapids and a 3 ft drop in one location. We wore hard hats with lights so when we were in a tunnel (longest tunnel was a mile long

A Grand Canyon in Hawaii

Tuesday was a fun adventurous day for all. The girls went for a walk in the morning along the beach while the guys played Kukuiolono Park Golf Course - best deal in Hawaii. A regulation 9 hole course in great condition overlooking the Pacific. Why the best deal ever?Very few tourists know about it and it's only $9 all day, $9 for Callaway rental clubs per 9-holes and $3 for a pull cart. What a great course and fantastic deal. After the guys returned, we headed out to Waimea. Our first stop was Hanapepe, a small Kauai town where we went to the Taro KO Chips factory in a very small bldg. Inside we met the only worker and the boss man (black shirt). They showed us how they make the chips and we bought a couple bags in different flavors. When everyone left the bldg, Bill continued chatting with the owner. When Bill started to leave, the owner insisted on giving him another bag of chips for free. Bill tried to pay or tip him, but in typical Aloha spirit, he wouldn't take a

Water Aerobics and the Spice Girls!

Image
2nd post to finish out the day (Mon). After breakfast, Karen and Denise headed to water aerobics while the guys went to the adult pool and jacuzzi for their morning workout after a walk.  If you look closely in the front middle, you'll find Karen and Denise. Carla headed to a lounge chair with her name on it to read her book. After our morning water sports activities, we visited Spouting Horn blowhole, one of the most photographed spots on Kauai. The surf channels into a natural lava tube and releases a hugh spout of water as the tide swells. Then off to lunch at Puka Dog for lunch - a fantastic hole in the wall with the most unique hot dogs you'll ever find. They bake their own version of Hawaiian sweet bread then impale that bread on a heated rod. Then in goes your choice. We had garlic lemon secret sause and Bill had mango infused and Karen (yes, they had a veggie version) had hers infused with pineapple. Yummy, yummy in the tummy! Next on the schedule
